I realised early on that I didn't quite fit in. Somehow my perceptions of life, the universe and everything didn't align easily with other people's. Recently I've found a quote that gives me hope.
"It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society", Jiddu Krishnamurti.
I hope the reverse is true, that the fact that I cannot adjust well to this sick society might be a measure of my health.
From a young age I was aware that most of what we take for granted each day is a human creation and not fixed by any law of nature. Some of this human-created-realm is physical, such as buildings, roads and power stations. But the more insidious part is invisible. Much of this infrastructure appears to be highly personal, for example, governing my and your interactions at a microscopic level. But when we look more closely, we can see that the socialisation we receive during childhood embeds powerful cultural norms that, for example, lead most of us all to obfuscate much of our communication in the hope of maintaining our standing within the current order. Other elements of human infrastructure are clearly far from personal - and the one that fascinates and appals me the most is money.
